The Wallich has received £500 from Asda Pillgwenlly, on Lower Dock Street after customers voted in store via the ‘Chosen by you… given by us…’ green token scheme for their favourite charity.
The money will be used to by the Newport Rough Sleepers Intervention Team who provide an outreach service and drop-in centre for those are street homeless.
Denise Rogers, Assistant Manager at The Newport Rough Sleepers Intervention Team said:
“We are thrilled to have public support from Asda and the people of Newport who voted for us.
This is a substantial amount of money and will be invaluable for rough sleepers, as it will go towards providing sleeping bags, wet weather gear and storm tents.
With the ongoing cuts to funding, we appreciate any support that we can get. Not only will this money provide us with vital funds to continue our service but the competition will also help to raise the profile of our project within the community.
Asda’s Community Life Champion, Caroline Jones said:
“The Wallich does a wonderful job working in the community to support rough sleepers and vulnerably housed people. Asda Pillgwnelly are really proud to support them.”
