As part of The Wallich’s annual Clash of the Corporates competition, one participant hosted a football tournament to help prevent homelessness.

On a chilly Tuesday morning, 12 teams geared themselves up on Cardiff’s House of Sport pitches for a 5-a-side football tournament.

The organisers, Le Gros Solicitors, coordinated the sporting battle as part of The Wallich’s Clash of the Corporates fundraising competition.

Alongside some well-known companies including Boulders and Savills property, we also submitted our own team made up of service users and staff.

Our team, aptly named The Wallich Allstars, was headed up by Senior Support Worker, Will Eastwood. He said:

“A football team gives our service users the chance to build relationships and confidence and, most importantly, a chance to enjoy themselves.

“The team is a huge opportunity for our service users to travel to new places, do some physical exercise, change their mentality or routine and provide a path back into society.”

After a fierce day of competition, it was Cardiff City – made up of coaches from the Cardiff City FC youth academy – who claimed victory and their prize, which was generously donated by Fine Wines Cardiff.

Ex-Wales football international and the current Wales U18s head coach, Craig Bellamy, was also at the event supporting his Cardiff City colleagues.

The money raised from the tournament will go towards The Wallich’s Reaching Out to Rough Sleepers campaign; fundraising for a new Street Fleet which will be used to help us get people off the streets, keep people off the streets and create opportunities.

Clash of the Corporates began in September. The teams were given £50 investment and 50 days to return as much as possible. Not only are the teams competing to raise the most, but they are also aiming to smash their own targets.

Thanks to all the teams for taking part and Le Gros Solicitors, your participation will help our Rough Sleepers’ Intervention Teams get more people off the streets and into safety: Acorn Property Group, Boulders, Savills Cardiff, Greenaway Scott, Michael Graham Young, Office Image Ltd, The Wallich All Stars, Cardiff City, Crooke and Arkwright, Herbert R Thomas, Portabella and Principality.
