Our newly opened Pearl House supported housing scheme in Pontypool Town Centre has welcomed its first residents

Previously an office space, Pearl House on Hanbury Road, has been transformed into modern flats, supporting individuals who have been homeless or are at risk of homelessness.

The £3 million refurbishment, carried out by Hedyn (formerly Melin Homes), who own the building, includes 15 self-contained, fully furnished apartments, solar PV panels for energy efficiency, and innovative low-carbon heating solutions.

As a Grade II listed building, works also took place to preserve its historical features such as the staircases, doors and other elements.

The Wallich will support residents, who are expected to stay at Pearl House for up to six months, while they are assisted with help to move onto alternative accommodation.

A new Housing Support Hub, run by The Wallich, will also be available on the ground floor and is due to open later this year.

The hub will offer a variety of services and host multiple agencies, including the council’s Housing Gateway team, to help those facing homelessness access the necessary support and advice.

One of first residents to move in is Anna-Marie Owens, who said

“Moving into Pearl House is life changing, because it’s stability and I can function normally.

“I have been homeless for 4 years and it has been hell, so this is really going to change my life.”

Tracy Barrington, The Wallich’s Service Manager at Pearl House, said

“The Wallich has been working with people who sleep rough, or have faced losing their home, for many years in Torfaen now, so we’re delighted to be part of a solution which helps people off the streets and into safety.

“The new accommodation is fantastic quality. That goes a long way to making people we support feel valued and take pride in where they live. We know safe, secure and settled housing will inspire our residents towards a positive future and break repeat cycles of homelessness – we can’t wait to welcome and support everyone who comes through its doors.”

Councillor David Daniels, Torfaen Council’s Executive Member for Adult Services and Housing, said

“This new development underscores the council’s commitment to preventing homelessness and supporting the local community. It falls in line with Welsh Government’s ambition to make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated.

“This builds on our overall approach to tackling and alleviating homelessness across Torfaen, placing residents at the centre of our services.”
