Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Housing Julie James visits Housing First in Anglesey

17 Jun 2024

The Wallich Anglesey housing project provides essential services and ‘hope for the future’

Earlier this month, the Minister paid a visit to one of our projects, Housing First, on Anglesey to meet staff and service users.

Housing First helps people experiencing homelessness to find a permanent home quickly, providing ongoing support to help them settle in and maintain their home.

Our service on Anglesey is the longest running Housing First in Wales.

Our support extends to people who are sleeping rough, sofa surfing, leaving secure mental health facilities, substance misuse treatment or prison and people who have been placed in temporary accommodation.

Speaking about the project, the Minister said:

“Everyone deserves to have somewhere to call home, which is why we’ve set out a radical and ambitious plan here in Wales to prevent and end all forms of homelessness.

“Spotting the risks early and taking action is a vital part to achieving this, and projects like Housing First in Anglesey are making a real difference and supporting our plans.”

The visit was a great chance for staff to speak to the Cabinet Secretary about the support we offer, as well as lived experience of homelessness, vulnerable housing and mental health.

The Wallich’s Ceredigion, North-West & Central Wales Area Manager, Ceri Thomas, said:

“We’re grateful to the Cabinet Secretary for taking the time to check in with our teams on Ynys Mon.

“We were pleased she was also able to speak to a service user we support and talk about their experience of insecure housing and homelessness.”

Julie James MS has been Cabinet Secretary for Housing, Local Government and Planning since 21 March 2024.
