“Our society sadly measures peoples’ success by how much money they earn, rather than the good work we do and the difference we make. I’d like to think I do my bit to help as all the staff at The Wallich do. Collectively we make a difference to peoples’ lives.”
Gareth’s current role as Strategic Operational Lead involves working with many wonderful people in innovative projects, across South East Wales.
Gareth originally joined The Wallich in 1997 as a volunteer before securing a temporary position as a project worker in Cardiff – delivering the first ever breakfast run to Cardiff’s rough sleepers. He says, “It remains one of the best jobs I have ever had”.
Following his temporary position with The Wallich, Gareth gained a wealth of experience at Llamau as a Bond and Advice Worker, Team Leader and then Area Manager – overseeing a broad range of young peoples’ projects including: advice, family mediation, assertive outreach, supported lodgings and supported accommodation projects.
In what seemed a natural step, Gareth returned to The Wallich after 18 years of working with young people and with visible homelessness rising again across Wales, to become Area Manager for the country’s leading homelessness and rough sleeping charity.
His remit as Strategic Operational Lead includes management of Area Managers in the south east and encompasses services such as Rough Sleepers’ Intervention Teams, supported accommodation, drop-in services and more.
All staff in his area work to deliver positive outcomes for some of the most at risk people in Wales.
“As we move into the post-pandemic period, it’s worth noting the contribution our staff made to keeping people in our society safe, often without the equally valuable recognition and praise that other key workers received.”
