Ty Tom Jones

Ty Tom Jones is a hostel for 24 people to have a place to live in Swansea

The hostel acts as a bridge between those leaving temporary accommodation and moving into a more permanent home.

To make sure that tenants don’t return to homelessness again, residents receive support, advice and assistance to ensure that they are ready to move and maintain their own tenancy in the future.

Ty Tom Jones opened in May 2020 as a response to the rapid and urgent need for more accommodation during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Wallich works in partnership with Swansea Council, Pobl and Caer Las to deliver the Ty Tom Jones service.

Together, The Wallich and Caer Las deliver specialist support for the residents of the hostel.

Support includes:

• Access to medical care
• Harm reduction support for those addressing substance misuse issues
• Counselling to address any underlying issues
• Budgeting advice and knowledge sharing
• Support to help with their mental health and wellbeing
• Advice to help with their physical health and wellbeing

About the building

The striking Ty Tom Jones building is the site of the former Swansea Foyer Young Persons Project and was a ‘World Habitat’ award finalist in 1998 when it was first built.

The building seeks to avoid the typical institutional features of a hierarchy of corridors, stairs and lobbies.

Ty Tom Jones is energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and is a converted listed building.

A new interior has been configured to create an indoor street with flats, offices and recreational spaces.

It has been updated and refurbished by Swansea Council.
