Established in 2016 the project, delivered by Theatre vs Oppression (TvO) in partnership with Wales Millennium Centre and The Wallich, empowers vulnerable adults to share their story in a creative, personal and thought-provoking way.
Behind the Label is produced and performed by a group of real people, sharing their real-life experiences – this includes trauma, addiction, homelessness or mental health issues – and have been labelled by society.
This unfiltered performance will challenge audience members’ ideas and preconceptions of people with certain issues. It asks everyone to look behind negative labels such as ‘junkie’ or ‘criminal’ and listen to the human stories that accompany them.
“I think I’ve said some of the stuff for the first time ever, it’s just become a massive weight off my shoulders…I’ve found different ways to express myself.”
Behind the Label has allowed the participants to build their confidence, discuss their experiences, make new friends and gain new skills that they can use in the future.
To prepare for the show, participants attended extraordinary creative workshops from script-writing to set design.
In addition, clients have been working with staff members at Wales Millennium Centre to gain other practical skills such as ushering, stage technical and marketing.
We know that the performers are proud to take the stage of an iconic Welsh theatre – an opportunity that does not come to many.
