Do Your Thing: Fundraising YOUR way to tackle homelessness together
The Wallich has launched a new way for supporters to get involved in the movement to end homelessness – calling on the people of Wales to “Do Your Thing” and celebrate the power of individuality.
There’s no wrong or right way to fundraise and Do Your Thing embraces that, championing creativity and freedom.
When people are empowered to do things their own way, positive change follows.
Whether it’s a danceathon, a cold-water dip, or something completely original, every contribution raises cash, inspires others and sparks imagination for a vital cause.

How to Do Your Thing
From the adventurous to the unconventional, there are endless ways to support.
Here’s a few fundraising ideas our brilliant supporters have already done to inspire you.
- Fund-raving: Skeleton Kru transformed a standard club night in Aberystwyth into a high-energy fundraiser where every penny from the door was donated.
- Office “Traitors”: Grant Thornton added purpose to their social calendar by turning office games like Bingo and The Traitors into competitive fundraisers.
- A “Service” Auction: Bid out your unique skills -like gardening, dog walking, or even car repairs -to your neighbours in exchange for donations.
- The “Give It Up” Challenge: Sacrifice a daily habit, such as your morning takeaway coffee or social media, for 31 days and donate the savings.
- Vinted for Vitals: Turn a closet clear-out into a lifeline by selling unwanted items on apps like Vinted and donating the proceeds.
- Hiking Mums: Lisa and Amy turned a 21km trek across the Gwent Three Peaks into a community movement.
- Wedding Purpose: Huw and Carys celebrated their big day by asking guests for donations to The Wallich in lieu of traditional gifts.
Why we need you
What began as a 10-bed hostel in 1978 has grown into a nationwide movement, delivering more than 100 services across Wales and providing more than 400 beds every night.
Our work focuses on three core pillars:
- Getting people off the streets
- Keeping people off the streets
- Creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives
Through outreach, accommodation, and support services, we help people rebuild confidence, independence, and stability.
Small acts, big impact
The money raised through your unique activities goes directly toward removing the barriers that stand between a person and a stable home.
- £10 could help keep our mobile vehicles stocked with hot drinks to build trust with people sleeping rough.
- £20 could provide a travel fare for a job interview, removing barriers to a fresh start.
- £100 could provide a creative workshop to help someone build confidence and find community.
- £1,000 could sustain life-changing projects like Steps to Progress, helping people develop skills for employment.
Real stories, real impact
Your support changes lives like Adele’s and Faisal’s.
Adele’s story
After experiencing domestic abuse and rough sleeping, Adele received support from a specialist Wallich women’s service. Since graduating from a training programme, she’s now restarting her career as a mechanic.
On her time with The Wallich, Adele said:
“I’ve become a different person. A better person. The Support Workers are amazing; they’ll do anything for me. They’ve made it an incredible journey, made it better life for me, they advised me, put me in the right direction and always encourage me to do well cause I’m a good person. They understand me, they know where I’ve been, what type of journey I’ve been on and I’m better now.”

Faisal’s story
After years of addiction, Faisal completed an intense abstinence programme at a Wallich project in Swansea. He has now reclaimed his independence and is ready to start a new chapter in a safe, permanent home.
“It’s been good since I’ve been here. I’ve had loads of support. I feel great now. I don’t want to go back to bad areas, where there are circles of drugs. I don’t want to go back down that road again. I’ve been there, done that, worn the t-shirts. It’s a mug’s game. I’ve achieved a lot since I’ve been in The Wallich project. I’m in the process now of moving on.”

A message from our team
Louisa Turner, Head of Fundraising at The Wallich, said:
“At The Wallich, we believe that everyone has a unique contribution to make. Our ‘Do Your Thing’ campaign is a celebration of that diversity. We see first-hand every day how empowering someone to be themselves can be the turning point in their journey out of homelessness.
“By choosing to fundraise in a way that reflects your own passions – no matter how unconventional – you aren’t just raising vital funds; you are sending a powerful message of solidarity. You’re proving that when we are all free to be ourselves, we can remove the barriers that hold people back and create a Wales where everyone has a place to call home.
